What was once the Hyde Park underground station, then iconic jazz cabaret venue has now been converted into London’s first boutique grand hotel; The Wellesley. Amidst the glamour of Knightsbridge, the hotel is a newcomer to the luxury scene; boasting the finest Italian food, outstanding service, stylish live music performances and a distinguished collection of the rarest spirits and cigars.
Designed by the renowned Fox Linton Associates, The Wellesley has been beautifully restored with a modern take on the art deco style. It now offers contemporary luxury and traditional glamour with its exclusive 36 suites/rooms. This was enough to intrigue us at the Luxe Travel & Style HQ, we had to experience it! Here is what we discovered…
We had the divine pleasure of staying in ‘The Wellesley Suite II’ located on the sixth floor, which consisted of one large king bedroom, marble bathroom, superb lounge and fire place, dining area (for up to 8 guests), powder room and stunning views of the city skyline and Hyde Park.
Things we loved;
Whilst the suite is decorated in classic décor and oozes a 1920’s decadence, we were pleasantly surprised to find state-of-the-art technology quietly infused into the surroundings. Each suite comes with a Samsung tablet for guest use (contact concierge, read newspaper, request butler, view menus...etc.), smart TVs, electronic blinds and automatic light settings.
The bathroom is L.A.V.I.S.H! It delivers an opulent Italian Arabescato Corchia white marble bathtub, Hermes amenities and even a television recessed into a mirrored wall.
It’s easy to say that The Wellesley offers delicious Italian cuisine from their Oval Restaurant, but it gets better! Why have dinner at a restaurant when you can have dinner at a Jazz lounge?
Guests can enjoy a mouth-watering array of Italian delicacies whilst basking in the sultry jazz performances and live music every Friday and Saturday evening in the Jazz Lounge.
There’s something magical about listening to a rendition of Ella Fitzgerald’s ‘They Can’t Take That Away From Me’ sung by a live jazz band with a grand piano in a room draped in beaded crystal screens and opulent dusky pink curtains – while enjoying your dinner.
You don’t have to be a world class cigar sommelier to appreciate the Wellesley’s Cigar Lounge. Instead you can admire that it’s the largest hotel humidor in Europe which showcases over £1.5m worth of the world’s finest cigars. The Humidor was commissioned by Italian humidor experts DeArt in conjunction with Fox Linton and even features a laser cut marble inlaid map of Cuba on the floor. If you’re not a regular cigar smoker, there’s probably never going to be a better place to try! However, if cigars aren’t your kind of thing, you could always enjoy a glass of cognac (over 1770 rare bottles) on the two outdoor private terraces which feature heating from open fireplaces, perfect for the brisk London winter.
It’s hard to visit London and not indulge in a traditional afternoon tea experience. The Wellelsey’s afternoon tea service blends an innovative menu (by Pastry Chef Cristiano Paolini) with teas from the finest estates in the world, all handpicked by the resident Tea Connoisseur, Leonardo Mattera to provide guests a delicious, elegant and unforgettable dining extravaganza.
Afternoon Tea and light fare is served between 2:00pm and 6:30pm weekdays and weekends.
The Wellesley has done a fantastic job in thinking outside the box when it comes to client offerings. Here are some of the innovative services that guests can enjoy during their stay;
All guests can make use of a complimentary Rolls-Royce drop-off service for local journeys (within 1.5miles of the hotel).
There is a 24 hour butler service which includes unpacking, steaming/pressing, room service…etc.
All guests are offered a Wellesley mobile phone on check-in for use while staying at the hotel. The phone also comes with business cards (detailing your new UK mobile number) which is perfect for international guests who are visiting for business in London.
