Given this fabulous establishment is frequented by Hollywood celebrities, business tycoons and fashion royalty (Joan Kennedy, Hugh Jackman , Gianni Versace, Domenico Dolce and Moschino … just to name a few); our expectations were already sky high. Let me tell you, The Tsitouras Collection did not disappoint!
The hotel’s story began in 1985 when a famous art collector, Dimitris Tsitouras acquired an old 1780’s mansion for the purpose of storing his beloved art collection. Not only was the mansion used as an extravagant personal gallery but Mr. Tsitouras also redesigned and built five luxurious ‘houses’ to host his friends during their visits to Santorini.
It wasn’t until a random meeting with Gianni Versace in 1999 (who booked the entire property for a month) that Dimitris decided to convert his estate into a high end boutique hotel, which is now managed by his daughter, Eleni Tsitouras.
Infinity pools are standard in luxury hotels these days. However, an infinity pool overlooking the Aegean Sea from a 1000ft cliff is an entirely different story. Every night, on the rooftop at sunset, guests are offered a delicious complimentary cocktail to enjoy while taking in the breathtaking view. And it is, without a doubt, a vista you will never forget.
Hate feeling guilty about missing breakfast because you’d rather sleep in? Well, guests can order breakfast any time they want, it’s available all day. The hotel even has a dedicated chef on hand ready to deliver your private fine-dining experience in the comfort of your room, balcony or on the rooftop terrace!
There is one thing that makes The Tsitouras Collection stand above all the others; the world class service. Owner, Eleni Tsitouras and her husband, George add a personal touch to the care they deliver to their clients. They are always waiting to greet you with a smile and they have a world of knowledge when it comes to Santorini’s local secrets. They gave us some amazing insider-tips and helped organise luxurious day trips with very little notice.
This entire hotel is filled with pieces from Dimitris Tsitouras’ famous art collection. Each 'house' is designed with a specific theme in mind and have their own distinctive characteristics. We had the pleasure of staying in 'The House of Portraits' which is decorated with stunning oil paintings, two elaborate vintage candelabras, antique mirrors in gilt frames, ancient oil lamps, carved wooden cherubs and even a 19th century wooden baptismal font as a coffee table! It’s ‘Luxe’ meets ‘Chic Gallery’.
However, the rooms aren't just stylish, they are incredibly functional and very homely! British designer, David Hicks definitely knew what he was doing when he created these masterpieces. The beds are insanely comfortable, the marble bathrooms are grand, the cotton robes are silky soft and the layout creates a very luxurious space. Who said beautiful things couldn't be practical?
With only five ‘houses’ on the entire property. you’re guaranteed a secluded getaway. All the peace and tranquility one could ask for. As for location? It doesn't get any better! The hotel is situated in Firostefani, only a 10 minute walk to Fira, the centre of town. Guests have the benefit of being close to the action and enjoying Santorini's cafes, restaurants and nightlife whilst still being able to retreat to their private balconies for some R&R.
